BCCI Secretary To Mentor SICA

The 88th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was scheduled on Sunday – their first after the newly elected body takes over the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA). Also, it is the first AGM in the last three years. Along with the other voting right members, the President of Sikkim Cricket Association (SICA) Lobzang G. Tenzing attended the meeting. This was a historic moment as for the first time any delegates from Sikkim was attending the AGM of BCCI as a full member.

In the meeting, many important decisions were discussed, such as the proposal for amendment of the existing constitution of the board, passing of accounts, adoption of the fresh budget for 2019-20 season, the appointment of fresh auditors, and many more. Among other topics, the President of SICA demanded the BCCI to handhold the new states and develop cricket in the region. This has been his constant demand to BCCI over the years and finally, after meeting the representatives of all the units, the Board has formed a three-member panel – comprising Ganguly, Dhumal and Shah — to look after the overall development of the new states. President Ganguly would focus on Meghalaya, Mizoram and Bihar, with the help of Naba Bhattacharjee. Secretary Jay Shah and Niranjan Shah would look after Sikkim, Uttarakhand and Arunachal Pradesh. Arun Singh Dhumal will be in-charge of Nagaland Manipur and Pondicherry.

Jay Shah, the son of Amit Shah, Minister of Home Affairs of India has been recently elected as the Secretary of BCCI. He has served as an executive board member of the Central Board of Cricket, Ahmedabad in 2009, and became the joint secretary of the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) in September 2013. He oversaw GCA’s project of constructing the Sardar Patel Stadium, the world’s largest cricket stadium, in Ahmedabad. He also became a member of the finance and marketing committees of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2015. With such an experience it is an honour for Sikkim to have him as a mentor.

During the meeting, it was announced that from the next season Under 16 girls tournaments will also be started, which is good news for players and also a landmark for the Women’s Cricket. Live telecast of Under 16 and Under 19 matches is to be started soon.

President Tenzing, who has to lead the SICA from last three years and worked efficiently with the North East Cricket Development Committee (NECDE) resulted in getting the full membership in the BCCI. It was his hard work and dedication that today our players (both men and women) are participating in 14 different national level cricket tournaments and also have helped in the growth of Cricket in the region.
