Strength & conditioning workshop for SICA trainers, coaches

Sikkim Cricket Association in its effort to create a pool of quality strength & conditioning coaches held a one-day workshop today where its trainers and coaches upgraded their coaching skills under the tutelage of former India team trainer Sudarsan VP.

Sudarsan, a strength & conditioning coach at National Cricket Academy, has been the trainer of Team India and India U-19 team at different times.

Along with trainers and coaches, physiotherapists and few players also attended the workshop held at the Sikkim Cricket Ground, at Mining.

Conditioning coaches develop systematic training programs for both teams and individual athletes, often working in close association with coaches.

The workshop gave a great overview into strength and conditioning and the fundamental principles and knowledge to advance human performance for competition and high level fitness.  

A wide array of topics was covered including scientific principles of strength & conditioning, analysing sporting demands, fundamental movement patterns and derivatives, essentials of periodization, player rehabilitation and injury prevention, effective exercises for bowlers and batsmen, workload monitoring, and key points the coaches should know about strength and conditioning.

The participants were able to understand the concepts of human anatomy, exercise physiology and biomechanics of resistance exercises, hypertrophy, power conversion and maintenance. The nutritional factors were also covered.

Having worked as a fitness trainer for over two decades now and two years as the trainer of India men’s team, Sudarsan is a well-known face in fitness arena. He ensured that his class was engaging and communicated his understanding through various practical demonstrations.

Tika Subba, President, SICA, said they have always looked to support the growth and development of its trainers and these workshops are a testament to that. 

He also expressed his delight to have Sudarsan back at SICA and share his experience with Sikkim coaches. He reflected on his previous experiences of working with Sudarsan and the hardships they shared, while also acknowledging Sudarsan’s contributions to Sikkim cricket.

Sudarsan worked as a trainer for Sikkim Cricket Association from 1996 to 2008 before joining National Cricket Academy, Bengaluru as an assistant strength & conditioning coach in 2009.

He was then appointed as the lead strength & conditioning coach from 2010 onwards. He was appointed as the strength and conditioning coach of Team India in 2013. He was also the trainer of India U-19 World Cup winning team in 2012 and toured with the India-A team and India U-19 team to different countries.
