Team Sikkim Shines In Vijay Merchant Trophy
The Under 16 Boys’ team of Sikkim won their final league match of the Vijay Merchant Trophy today against Manipur at Ravenshaw University Ground, Cuttack, Odisha. With this win, Sikkim topped the Northeast and Bihar Zone group with 27 Point(s). They won all the matches played in the league round except one match which was abandoned with no results due to rain. Sikkim had qualified for the knockouts when they won their match against Nagaland on 1st November, but with this win, they secured the first position in the group.
The match was started on 6th November where Manipur won the toss and elected to bat. In the first innings, Manipur was all-out for 60 runs in 31.3 overs. It was Yawar Hussain’s brilliant bowling who took 7 wickets and Tusya Naman Sharma with 3 wickets restricted the opponent to the marginal total. Sikkim in their first innings made 203 runs in 76 overs taking the lead of 143 runs. Adarsh Pandey made 60 runs, Tarun Sharma 56 runs, Senge Wajahat Medhi 33 runs and contributed to this total. In the second innings once again the intense bowling by Yawar and Tusya taking 4 wickets each and Tarun with 2 wickets wrapped up the match, winning it by an innings and 7 runs.
Sikkim created history by entering the knock-outs of the tournament for the very first time. The knock-outs will start on 25th November and the fixtures and venues will be declared once all the league matches are over. Team Sikkim will be travelling to Chennai for the camp before the knock-outs begin. Sikkim Cricket Association (SICA) is proud of the team and support staffs and congratulates them for creating history and also wishes them luck for the knock-outs.
